Tendonitis is a medical condition wherein the tendons, the cords or bands of tissue that connect the muscles to the bones, become inflamed, deteriorated or torn. This can happen due to a number of reasons, such as overusing or overworking the muscles for long durations or lifting very heavy weights too suddenly. Tendonitis can be extremely painful and if left untreated for a long time, can reduce the functionality in the area that is affected.
When can tendonitis occur?
Tendonitis can occur if we make sudden or sharp movements such as jumping or throwing something. Overuse of any muscle in the arm or leg such as stretching, squatting or lifting very heavy weights can also cause tendonitis. Depending on which part of the body has been affected with tendonitis, the appropriate treatment will have to be administered.
Treatment
A proper medical examination is of vital importance and must first be conducted for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
The doctor will usually suggest more simple forms of treatment before advancing to stronger treatments. The first step is to apply an ice pack to the affected area for 20-30 minutes, 3-4 times a day. Medications or painkillers such as ibuprofen or aspirin to reduce the pain and inflammation may be prescribed for up to 2-3 weeks, even a month, till the tendonitis gets better. Complete rest is as important as the other forms of treatment, as you cannot afford to aggravate the affected area or make the tendonitis worse.
More serious cases of tendonitis may require corticosteroid injections or anesthesia to be injected into the affected area. Physiotherapy, ultrasound massage therapy, deep heat treatments, water therapy and friction massage are other more advanced forms of treatment. The duration of therapy would depend upon the extent of the injury.
The last and most advanced form of treatment would be plastic surgery if the other treatments were not successful.
