FILLERS: injectable fillers are optimally suited for volume replacement of skeletal-looking hands and the treatment of protruding bones, tendons or veins. In some cases, hyaluronic acid-based fillers such as Juvederm® or Restylane® can be utilized for hand rejuvenation; however, Radiesse® is often the preferred choice for this type of procedure. Radiesse® is a semi-permanent, calcium hydroxylapatite-based filler that is both cost-effective and long-lasting, producing skin-smoothing results that can last 1-2 years. Radiesse® is often used to restore volume to areas of thinning skin on the hands, and instantly produces a supple, youthful appearance. As it is injected beneath the skin, Radiesse® elevates the skin level to decrease the prominence of tendons, joints and veins.
Radiesse® does not require allergy testing and can safely be injected into the hand at multiple locations and levels to reshape and augment the hands. Depending upon the patient’s hand rejuvenation needs, Dr. Yalif may also opt to use a combination of dermal fillers in conjunction with IPL and laser resurfacing to produce optimal hand rejuvenation results.
FAT INJECTIONS (a.k.a. autologous fat grafting or fat transfer): autologous fat transfer is the process of harvesting fat from one area of the body and injecting it into another area to restore volume to a depleted area. Candidates for fat grafting typically present with prominent veins and tendons on the hands, thinning skin, and/or arthritis and wasting of the hands—these patients typically desire fuller, healthier, and more youthful-looking hands. Successful rejuvenation of the aging hand with the fat transfer procedure is the meticulous creation of an integrated layer of fat grafts over the back of the hand, making the skin look and feel thicker with a naturally youthful fullness.
During the fat transfer procedure, liposuction is used to remove fat from areas of the body with excess fatty tissue (i.e. the hips, abdomen, back or thighs). The fat is then sterilized and processed for fat transfer, before being re-injected into the hands. The harvested fat is grafted in multiple layers to ensure that a smooth, linear deposit of fatty tissue is available to augment and revitalize the hands. After the procedure, the incisions are closed with sutures and tape is placed as a protective barrier.
